Do Guinea Pigs Know When You’re Sad: How Can You Tell?

If you’ve ever been sad around your guinea pigs and notice that they start acting differently, then that can lead you to wonder why they’re doing this.

It can almost seem like your guinea pigs know when you’re sad, so do they actually know when you are?

Guinea pigs do know when you’re sad and they usually can tell when you’re feeling that way by how you’re acting and sometimes even by the tone of your voice.

They may even act differently if they notice that you’re feeling down and sometimes they might try to comfort you as well.

So this is something that you can look out for if you’re ever feeling sad around your guinea pigs, although this mainly only happens when they’re used to you and already know how you usually act.

Do Guinea Pigs Know When You’re Sad?

Some guinea pigs do know when you’re sad and this can be a very common thing to see if you’re already bonded with them.

So that means that if your guinea pigs aren’t fully bonded with you already then they may not notice if you’re feeling upset because they’re not used to how you usually act yet.

But if your guinea pigs are already familiar with you then sometimes they may notice that something has changed with you.

This is mainly because guinea pigs are social animals, so even though they won’t always pick up on all social situations they can do it every now and then when they think that you’re sad.

They’ll know that something is wrong by the way that you act or by how you sound.

So if you’re usually a very cheerful or talkative person and all of a sudden you’re not anymore, then they may notice that something is different about you and you’re not acting how you normally would act.

Guinea pigs can be very attentive sometimes so they can pick up on some of your different moods and they can usually sense when you’re sad or upset over something.

How To Tell When Your Guinea Pigs Know That You’re Sad

If your guinea pigs know that you’re sad then there are some ways that you can tell that they slightly understand how you’re feeling.

One of the ways that you can tell that they know that you’re sad is when they are quieter than usual around you.

Guinea pigs are usually very vocal animals so if they think that something is wrong with you then they might not be as loud.

It’s almost like they’re trying their best to mirror how you’re acting at the moment.

You’ll also notice that they will watch you a lot more than they usually do as well. You can tell that this is happening when they sit close to the sides of their cage so that they can see what you’re doing and how you’re doing.

Another way to tell when your guinea pig knows that you’re sad is if they don’t like to be petted as much but now they’re letting you pet them.

So they’ll quietly sit still and let you pet them or they’ll just try to be near you when they think that something is wrong.

Guinea pigs can get the zoomies so sometimes they won’t get them for a while or as much when they know that you’re feeling sad as well.

So most of the time they will just be calm in general because they can sense that something might be off with you.

Your Guinea Pigs Can Try To Tell You That Everything Will Be Okay

Sometimes when you’re feeling sad your guinea pigs can try to tell you that everything is fine and will be okay.

This is something that you may also see them do to each other when they sense that one of their little friends is feeling down as well.

The reason why is that most of the time guinea pigs can be very affectionate towards any of their companions that they’ve bonded with especially when they’re feeling sad, and that includes their owners too.

So one of the ways that a guinea pig can try to tell you that everything is going to be okay is by cuddling you in their own way.

That can be rubbing up against you or just relaxing near you when they think that something has made you feel sad.

Another way that some guinea pigs can try to cheer you up with some of their affection is by licking you.

So they will try to lick your fingers or your hands in an attempt to make you feel better and let you know that they’re there for you.

One more way that a guinea pig can try to let you know that everything is going to be fine is by laying down on you.

So if you usually take them out of their cage and give them some lap time, then they may relax and sometimes even fall asleep on you too.

This can be one of their ways of showing you how comfortable they are and that you should be comfortable too and hopefully cheer up.

Let Your Guinea Pigs Know When You’re Not Sad Anymore

One of the first things that you should do once you’re not feeling sad anymore is to let your guinea pigs know that you’re starting to feel okay again.

If you’re feeling up to it even when you’re sad then you can still let your guinea pigs know that you’re feeling okay too.

Either way, just try your best to let your guinea pigs know that you’re feeling better in any way that you can.

One of the ways that you can let your guinea pigs know that you’re okay is by giving them some cuddle time.

You can just be near them and share some physical contact with them, and this can let them know that you might be returning to your normal self.

Another thing that you can try is to talk to them in a calm voice and let them know that you’re feeling better too.

It also really helps if the tone of your voice seems to be more cheerful when you’re talking to them.

While you’re talking to your guinea pigs you can even let them know why you were sad or what made you feel that way. This can really help you and your guinea pigs when you do this.

The reason why is that this can not only help let them know that you’re starting to feel better, but it also gives you a chance to vent a little bit about why you’re sad.

So the more that you talk to them in a calm way can make it easier for them to understand that you’re not as sad anymore.

That can mean that they will go back to acting normally after they noticed that you are too.

So once you’re starting to feel better your guinea pigs may pick up on that and eventually when you start to cheer up then so will your guinea pigs.
